Symbiotic Table Series

Mia Brownell’s paintings reimagine the food still life by merging 17th-century Dutch realism with contemporary scientific imagery. Her work probes the biochemical relationships between humans and the earth, positioning everyday subject matter within larger conversations about science, culture, and the global food economy.

Historically, Still Life paintings used food and flowers to speak of time, wealth, and mortality. In Brownell’s work the subject shifts from opulence and memento mori to symbiosis and molecular mechanics. Eating becomes our most intimate connection to other forms of life and to the industrial systems that permeate our land, water, and flesh. In her hands, the pantry becomes a diagram of the body that depends on it.

Brownell’s paintings do not illustrate data, they harness a pictorial tradition to carry a contemporary understanding of life at the molecular scale. Her compositions follow an affinity for the systems that hold things together.
